Kristin's interest in apparel began in the early 1980’s when her love of New Wave music and culture exposed her to odd and innovative design. In 1987, her college roommate Sophie taught her how to knit. Eleven years after casting on her first stitch, these two interests merged into an Apparel Design degree from Bassist College in Portland, OR. Upon graduation, Kristin chose to pursue a path in knitwear design with a focus on hand knitting, and has since worked as free-lance designer and knitting teacher. Her designs have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, Family Circle Easy Knitting, and Knitters, as well as several of the Vogue On the Go series of books. She is the author of four books: "Knits From the Heart", "Crochet From the Heart", and "Blankets, Hats, and Booties" (all published by Martingale & Company). Her fourth book, a collection of knitting patterns for men, was published by Ten Speed Press in September 2007. Kristin currently serves as the design director for ShibuiKnits yarn company. When not knitting, Kristin volunteers at House of Dreams Cat Shelter, practices yoga, takes hip hop and samba dance classes, bikes, cooks, and reads 19th century novels and books on fashion history. |
